.PERIOD 1981-83

.
  • Founder-member of new EHQ department - HQ A&IS Strategy Development Dept
    • This dept set up outside HQ IS, and reporting directly to the Group Director, to examine new opportunities, to define advanced systems and services to go into new EHQ building, to design and launch pilots
    • The basic role of the dept. is as "Agents of Change". In 1982 the approximately 7-member dept installed about œ1M of equipment ( 2 4300s, 70+ screens, printers and PCs). In 1983 there should be a further œ3.5M ( 5 4341, 400-500 terminals/PCs ).
    • Most of these devices are for new users - people who have not handled terminals before (secretaries, professionals, managers).
    • These projects are the first, major steps towards the rapid and complete coverage of a complete organisation (1800+ people). Almost all the top echelon ( VPs etc ) will soon be 'online'.
    • Providing to each person, at their desk, a full range of office, communication and decision assist services.
  • Involved in many aspects of the concept and design of the new European Headquarters building - particularly in areas such as the 'office systems' in all senses to be available throughout the building, the means of delivering these, the underlying networking and computer architecture, floor layout concepts, etc.
  • Defined, implemented and ran a pilot office system using the PSS product on the main HQ VM service
  • Appointed Program Manager Principal Support Systems
  • Defined an "Executive Support Pilot" - a project to put a colour screen on the desk of the members of a complete organisational leg, from secretaries/professionals up to Vice President. Selected and configured the system (dedicated 4331, networking, component software). Demonstrated to all levels of the 'customer set' and obtained agreement
  • Assisted in the actual implementation of this, and similar prototypes and pilots.
  • Worked on the evaluation of the projects. Worked with EMEA and an outside specialist (Lord McIntosh of IFF Research) to develop and carry out a new, comprehensive methodology for measuring and assessing terminal-based office systems. This effort is still continuing.
  • Became very familiar with the problems of introducing such systems (user attitudes, user capabilities, training needs, organisational impacts, support) and evolving them.
  • Education
    • SICOB Convention Informatique (Paris 9/81)
    • ESRI Computer Graphics (La Hulpe 10/81)
