The Gladings

My father was GLADING, George Fenn, b 22 May 1908 Ipswich,. Suffolk, England.

There were a number of 'clusters' of Gladings around the UK, although Suffolk has been the main area.
see below.

My mother was Dorothy Rose Lansley.
Daughter of Harry Lansley from Hampshire
and Rose Wiltshire, also of Hampshire.

[tracing a Wiltshire from Hampshire can get confusing !!]

A 'Public Family Tree' (called DougGladingDec2019) is available at www.ancestry.co.uk .

The numbers of Gladings in the UK have not fluctuated much -- as shown by this analysis of the UK Census 1841 - 1911

Analysis also shows the occupations of these Gladings. And there is a really wide variation. About 25 different jobs appear in every census. Most it must be said are fairly basic, (eg labourer, domestic) but there were also the odd confectioner, shoemaker, teacher, policeman, watch maker, etc. Of course some Gladings went to sea and don't appear in the census.

Other Interests

I am also interested (out of curiosity - no connection (yet) known) in the GLADINGs of Philadelphia.
and the
The Glading Memorial Presbyterian Church, Loretto Ave, Philadelphia PA

I came across the Church by accident. I was on business in the States (I worked for IBM for 30-odd years) and had a weekend to spare en-route from I think Texas to the Hudson valley. So tossed a mental coin on where to stop-off. Chose Philly, just as an interesting major city to see. While sitting in hotel, cheesed off with the tv, I looked at the phone book. Was amazed to read there was the Church.

Next morning I went into the city Visitors' Centre - they helped me locate the church, and even rang up the pastor to ask wwhen there was a service. I just had time to drive out, sit in the service and make myself known. Some years later I was able, while on holiday in the US, to take my wife to see it. And the pastor copied some info from the church safe (they didn't have that much really).

The church was dedicated in 1933. It was built as a result of bequests ($100,000) by Miss Annie (Anna) Glading (b 1839, d 1931) in memory of her parents Ann and William G.

William b 15 Apl 1807, d 27 July 1877 at 703 Pine St, which he bought in 1855. He was fairly well off, from a company Glading & Christian (flour and grain traders) and having large holdings in 3 insurance companies.
W had 4 children
Elizabeth b 1831 d 1918
Joseph b 1834 d 1891
John b 1836 d 1914
Anna
W was son of John and Elizabeth Commondor. They were married 11 Jan 1803 at the German Lutheran Church. Note the wedding record details seem to have spelt the name Gladding (which happens all the time with this name). I have no other info about them.

Wal Glading of Australia

Quite a few years back I had an email out of the blue from him (Wal Glading) who had fallen over me on the web.

Wal is australian, and ran a small, virtually one-man, tour operator. He brought small groups of aussies over to Europe and drove them around in one or 2 mini-buses.

We've become friends. When my daughter Zoe went to Australia on holiday I got Wal to book her into hotels - she and husband visited Wal (he's between Sydney and Canberra). Zoe came back having seen him saying we must be related.
But we have not as yet managed to prove any link.

2 or 3 years later my wife and I were visiting Zoe in Germany (husband was in the army) and this coincided with one of Wal's tours. So we met up in Goslar. My wife also said we look similar!!
I also met Wal and his wife in Normandy.

I have managed to trace Wal's ancestors back to England -- but only to Ware in Hertfordshire, not Suffolk.....
